Ohio State’s Luoma stacks up NRA Smallbore Rifle titles

Ohio Junior receives nine trophies, plaques and medals at NRA Rifle Championship

Port Clinton, Ohio – Hundreds are called to the Hough Theater stage every summer during the NRA’s National and Pistol Championships in Camp Perry. During the 2012 Smallbore 3-Position Rifle Championships, for example, more then a hundred made their way up the stairs to receive prize or recognition. Some were called more then once, but none were called more then Ohio State Junior Amanda Luoma.

Finishing third overall, with a score of 2281-92x, Luoma also emerged as the overall Collegiate and Junior Champion.

Three? You’re harping on about three?

There were more then the three. We haven’t mentioned the individual championships yet. An impressive achievement given the conditions of match.

“The weather was really brutal on the second day,” said Luoma. “I honestly didn’t know what a good score would be. It was really stressful. I thought I was shooting bad, but with those conditions, everyone had a fair chance.”

Conditions? What conditions

How about gales strong enough to rip windage flags while scattering tents, chairs and accessories across the field? Add the accompanying downpour and brutal is an understatement.

Nevertheless, Luoma and others picked their spots, pulled their triggers and found their targets true. True enough to earn her XXX trips to the stage.

In addition to finding her way on stage for three overall awards, Luoma also received top billing as the High Junior for Metallic Sights, High Master Junior (4th overall) for Any Sights, 2nd overall for Metallic Sights Kneeling, and High Junior (6th overall) for Any Sights Standing … not to mention earning a place on the International Randle Trophy team.

All of which started thanks to the Junior Shooting Camps there at Camp Perry.

“I went to the Junior Camp for three years before moving to the big line,” Luoma explained. “And my coaches are actually here tonight. I’m glad that they could be here to see how well I’ve done.”

Well enough to take almost ten trips to the Hough Theater stage this summer during the Smallbore 3-Position Rifle Championships.
