WaltherPPKThe Walther Model PPK came on the market in 1931 as a compact version of the larger Walther PP. The fame of the PPK model was due in part to the many James Bond movies. The Model PPK stands for Polizei Pistol Kurz and was also known as the Polizei Pistole Kriminal. The PPK was mainly successful in the US, but the import of this model ended in with the American Gun Control Act of 1968. To meet new requirements on minimum height for imported guns, Walther designed a new version called the Walther PPK/S. Later, this requirement was bypassed by issuing a license to an American representative, Interarms.

In 1999, another step was taken to bring the Walther models to the US.. Smith & Wesson of Springfield, Massachusetts and Carl Walther GmbH of Germany announced a joint plan to distribute Walther branded firearms and accessories in the United States.
