Emmons On Top Down Under

SYDNEY, AUS. (26 March 2010) – Once again, Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) fought his way to the top of the award podium at the World Cup in Sydney, Australia. His 1272.6 points in Men’s 3-Position Rifle was good enough for a come-from-behind victory on Saturday that gave him another gold medal for his growing collection.

Emmons has been dominant in the event that has made him one of the most famous Olympic shooters in the world. Although he has fallen short in two Olympic opportunities, he has also won more than any other active US athlete in the challenging 3-position contest. In this competition, his 102.6 in the final propelled him to the top spot over Austria’s Mario Knoegler.

Joining Emmons as a Sydney medalist was Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.), one of America’s top female rifle shooters. She grabbed a bronze medal in Women’s Air Rifle with a score of 499.6, and then followed up that strong performance with a silver medal in Women’s 3-position Rifle, posting 680.2, including an outstanding 101.2 in the final. Her double-medal performance is the best of her career, although Beyerle has been a regular in the finals of both events the past two years including both finals in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Also winning a medal for the US was Daryl Szarenski (Fort Benning, Ga.), whose 567 in Free Pistol and 94.9 in the final was good enough for the bronze. Szarenski also had a strong showing in Men’s Air Pistol, where his fifth place finish was a mere 1.4 points out of medal contention.

All tolled, eight USA Shooting team members made the finals in their events, a strong showing for the Rifle and Pistol team, whose best finals tally in a World Cup in 2009 was six finals in Munich, Germany, last May.
