Truly TACTICAL Response….

When the organizers of the TN LE Expo realized with 10 minutes notice that there were still attendees showing up for a lecture that I had to cancel on, they looked around and found James Yeager of Tactical Response and tagged him with a simple question: “Can you cover a lecture session in 5 minutes?”…. of course, the answer was “Sure!”

A lot of people talk about being “subject matter experts”, but how expert are they really? Tony Blauer has stressed the difference between someone who knows their subject and someone who understands the substance that underlies the subject in question. These Substance Matter Experts, as he refers to them, can do more than just recite a bullet point list of procedures or quote an SOP…. they can analyze information related to their topic as a true EXPERT and apply information to the context of a vartiety of different and dynamic situations.

In studying Warrior Expert Theory, we know that true experts relate to information differently than others simply because of the level of exposure they’ve had to it. Give a true expert 5 mintues lead time on a lecture and he doesn’t worry about an outline, cue cards, powerpoint or handouts.

James Yeager has been teaching for a long time and his company’s courses are known for being intense and dynamic. They stress responding in real world sitautions, not just performing on a square range. James walked-the-walk as an instructor to fill a gap that was created when I had to take the opportunity to tape for TBD:S at Disaster City….  I appreciate that, but I especailly appreciate the style it which it was done.

His presentation on the effects of andrenal response and the realtionship between physiological response and negligent discharges was even closely related to the my originally scheduled topic of training to avoid Sympathetic Reaction Shootings… bonus points!

So, in addition to a public “Thanks” to James, let this blog serve as a reminder to all instructors and students that sharing information should be about the information, not rehearsal, props and powerpoints! In order to share information, it has to be collected, processed and analyzed first…. that’s the process that truly creates an expert.

Check out what James and his crew have to offer at the Tactical Response website.
