{"id":5826,"date":"2010-08-28T00:29:34","date_gmt":"2010-08-28T05:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/?p=5826"},"modified":"2010-08-28T00:29:34","modified_gmt":"2010-08-28T05:29:34","slug":"epa-denies-petition-to-ban-traditional-ammunition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/epa-denies-petition-to-ban-traditional-ammunition\/5826\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA Denies Petition to Ban Traditional Ammunition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/leadammo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5827\" title=\"leadammo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/leadammo-300x177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/leadammo-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/leadammo.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>From the NSSF Blog (By Larry Keane): Following a strong grassroots campaign led by the National Shooting  Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms,  ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, the Environmental  Protection Agency (EPA) has denied a petition by the Center for  Biological Diversity (CBD)\u2013 an established anti-hunting group \u2014 calling  for a ban on the production and distribution of traditional ammunition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/oppt\/chemtest\/pubs\/Owens_Petition_Response.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">An EPA letter to the petitioners<\/a> explaining the reasons for the  rejection mirrored the legal arguments raised by the NSSF in its letter  to the U.S. agency.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Owens, EPA assistant administrator for the Office of Chemical  Safety and Pollution Prevention, said, \u201cEPA today denied a petition  submitted by several outside groups for the agency to implement a ban on  the production and distribution of lead hunting ammunition. EPA reached  this decision because the agency does not have the legal authority to  regulate this type of product under the Toxic Substances Control Act  (TSCA) \u2013 nor is the agency seeking such authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the decision of the EPA, NSSF President Stephen L.  Sanetti said, \u201cThis is a tremendous victory for all sportsmen, hunters  and gun-owners.\u00a0 As the trade association for America\u2019s firearms and  ammunition industry, NSSF is thankful to the tens of thousands who  answered our call to action and made their voices heard. Today\u2019s victory  belongs to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane  noted, \u201cAs we celebrate today\u2019s decision, the fight to preserve and  protect traditional ammunition from legislative, regulatory and judicial  attack remains. And in order to ensure that our right to choose the  ammunition we hunt and shoot with continues, it is imperative that we  stay vigilant.
