{"id":5070,"date":"2010-07-24T07:41:53","date_gmt":"2010-07-24T12:41:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/?p=5070"},"modified":"2010-07-29T13:02:28","modified_gmt":"2010-07-29T18:02:28","slug":"2nd-at-single-stack-nats-taran-butler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/2nd-at-single-stack-nats-taran-butler\/5070\/","title":{"rendered":"2nd at Single Stack Nats: Taran Butler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Courtesy of the <a title=\"WomenofUSPSA.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.womenofuspsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Women of USPSA blog<\/a>,  this is the fourth interview in a series with the top five shooters at  this year\u2019s USPSA Single Stack Nationals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, we\u2019re down to the final two \u2026 the fast and furious Taran Butler shares some of his single stack thoughts with us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2nd Place \u2013 Taran Butler<\/strong> (<em>2010 Western States Single Stack Classic Champion, 5-Time USPSA Multi Gun National Champion<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/SC09_1454Taran1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5071\" src=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/SC09_1454Taran1-300x199.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> Taran, congratulations on your 2nd place  finish at the Single Stack Nationals.\u00a0 This has been one of the closest  races in SSN history!\u00a0 \u00a0You shot a great match and were so close to  being the one to break Rob\u2019s streak!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taran &#8211;<\/strong> Thank you for your comments., and  congratulations again to Rob \u2014 to me he will always be the greatest  shooter who\u2019s ever lived.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> That\u2019s a kind compliment, but you\u2019re on  our\u00a0list of great shooters, too!\u00a0 You earned your\u00a0second\u00a0consecutive  Western States Single Stack Classic Title earlier this year.\u00a0 What  exactly was your thought process for <em>this<\/em> single stack event?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taran &#8211;<\/strong> My mindset coming into this match was to try and just be as <strong>accurate<\/strong> as I could.\u00a0 I\u2019m still fairly new to using a <strong>fiber optic front sight<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve only been shooting it for a year and a half or so and it\u2019s <strong>greatly improved my accuracy<\/strong>.\u00a0 If I just see that dot at all during a stage, it usually turns out pretty well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> How did it make you feel after\u00a0winning the  Western States Single Stack Classic?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Underdog or Favorite coming into  the Nationals?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taran<\/strong> \u2013 As far as the Western States Single Stack  Championships is concerned, I\u2019ve obviously had better performances there  the last three years.\u00a0 I personally like the match much better as far  as the shooting is concerned, higher round count and more movement,  which\u00a0has always been one of my strongest suits, but you gotta be good  at everything and be able to adapt to every style of shooting.<\/p>\n<p>I compare what we do quite often to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) \u2014 you  can\u2019t just be into fast action hosing, which I compare to standup  fighting, or just be good on the ground with ju jitsu \u2013 which I compare  to more difficult shots, steel, standards, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> Historically at the Single Stack, the GM\u2019s are  spread out all over the match in different squads. \u00a0This year was no  exception. Do you prefer to shoot with a variety of shooters or do you  like to be squadded in a Super Squad?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taran &#8211;<\/strong> I think it\u2019s actually kind of cool to  disperse\u00a0two Grand Masters (Super Squad members) throughout the squads  to get to shoot with everyone.\u00a0 It\u2019s always fun at the end to shake  everyone\u2019s hand and say how much you enjoyed shooting with someone new.\u00a0  But it\u2019s always fun to shoot with the lunacy of the Super squad, too.\u00a0  Things are a lot more <strong>laid back<\/strong> in that squad now than it was in the past.\u00a0 Everyone seems to have more of a<strong> sense of humor<\/strong>, which I like.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Todd-Phil-Taran-Rob.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Todd-Phil-Taran-Rob-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Todd-Phil-Taran-Rob-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Todd-Phil-Taran-Rob-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.downrange.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Todd-Phil-Taran-Rob.jpg 1608w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> The Super Squads\u00a0have had\u00a0their  less-than-serious moments!\u00a0 : )\u00a0 Did you have a standout moment or  unique match experience you would like to share?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taran &#8211;<\/strong> The only standout moment was to tie with  Robbie on the Standards.\u00a0 If you are able to do that you know you are  doing something right!<\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> Very memorable moment\u00a0indeed \u2013 Congrats!\u00a0 As a  multi-gun and Limited Shooter, is there something that\u00a0draws you to  the\u00a0Single Stack Division?<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nTaran &#8211;<\/strong> What I really like about Single Stack competitions is we\u2019re all shooting <strong>head to head<\/strong> with very similar gear.\u00a0 There\u2019s something about <strong>how the gun feels in your hand<\/strong> and also how it makes you shoot more accurately because you don\u2019t have  any room for pickup shots or any mistakes.\u00a0 It actually helps me shoot  other divisions better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> Discipline \u2026 Now, tell us about the gun and your gear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taran &#8211;<\/strong> The gun I shoot is an <strong>Infiniti<\/strong> single stack with their gold AET <strong>Schuemann match barrel,<\/strong> <strong>Aftec<\/strong> extractor, <strong>Brazos<\/strong> micro dot front sight with a <strong>Champion<\/strong> adjustable rear sight and <strong>Techwell\u2019s<\/strong> large magwell fitted to <strong>Tripp Research\u2019s<\/strong> custom system\u2019s magazines with all the extra fitting done by <strong>Salient Arms. <\/strong>All is finished off with <strong>ION Bond\u2019s diamond black coating. <\/strong>My holster is a <strong>Bladetech<\/strong> with <strong>Safariland<\/strong> inner belt\/outer belt and <strong>771 mag pouches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I have 3 sets of this gun in 40 S&amp;W and <strong>if I ever do win this match, <\/strong>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever retire the guns like Robbie.\u00a0 They were too hard to get setup the way I like.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WoU &#8211;<\/strong> Sounds like you should definitely hang on to  them!\u00a0 Congrats again, Taran.\u00a0 We really appreciate your input and  time.\u00a0 Best of luck with all your matches this year!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women of USPSA interviews Taran Butler, 2nd place shooter at this year\u2019s Springfield Armory\/USPSA Single stack Nationals.
