There are many people that haven\u2019t been to a national park but are still \u201cup in arms\u201d about us being armed while tracking in the back country of this great land. I think that carrying a firearm in a national park is a good idea. When I was in the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, one of our training courses was on \u201cGangs\u201d and \u201cOfficer Survival\u201d. Our national parks are known to the feds as hangouts for outlaws, bad guys, drug farmers, dealers, sociopaths and other less desirables with otherwise good outdoor skills. If the truth is told, everybody with a tent out there isn\u2019t on vacation.<\/p>\n

If you stray off the beaten path or share a public area with one of these guys at the wrong time you could be in the presence of a serial killer we haven\u2019t caught yet. One of those jokers from \u201cAmericas Most Wanted\u201d, a producer of a secret marijuana crop, or a \u201cMeth lab\u201d is on the property usually hidden in plain site. According to a NRA article, \u201cThe National Park Service said there were 3,760 reported major crimes, including five homicides and 37 rapes, in 2008, the most recent year for which data was available. The agency does not note which crimes involve firearms.\u201d
\nI can tell you from experience that people do not report crime accurately or in every case. They also do not share information in places where they fear a loss of revenue would result so some places, people or politicians will not tell you how dangerous a place is if it hurts the bottom line.
\nYou are responsible for your own safety. It has always been this way and it is foolish to think the one or two people working in thousands of acres policing traffic, access and egress, and providing directions can be where you are in the park 24\/7. You know you like to walk off the beaten path to get away from it all. What if you found out after a five mile hike you were not alone?
