Expiration Date of Emergency Pack Water Question
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:36:33 pm »
I've got a few "Aqua Blox" and "Datex" packs of emergency water.  They both state a 5 year shelf life.  I've been saving them for use with MRE heaters and non-potable applications.  But does anybody know why it's only got a shelf life of 5 years?  Other than chemicals from the packaging "could" leach out and into the water, or maybe a microbe "could" have survived the purification process and just be waiting for a way out.....  I can't seem to find any other plausible reasons.

What am I missing?  Any thoughts or ideas from our members are appreciated?

Jackel,

What's really scary, if you think about it, is we're all drinking Cesar's sewage (not to mention mammoth pee) :-X............. ;D

So 6 year old water doesn't seem so bad now, huh....

An excellent question.  Thanks for raising it.  I have often wondered the same thing myself.

How it was explained to me is, is the plastic containers have a fixed life span.

granted that could just be marketing BS, or it could be a FDA rule that says all products must have a  shelf life no longer then 5 years.

look at honey, it never goes bad, but why does it have a use by date on it?
I'd listen to TAB. I mean, he must know his stuff on this subject - his current avatar is obviously successful at stuffing extra ammo in a standard container.
