Mini 14 magazines
« on: November 06, 2008, 08:58:34 PM »
I've heard rumors that some AR15 magazines will work in the Ruger Mini 14. Does anyone know if this is true or an urban myth?

Myth.

Can't speak for every mag, but the AR mags I tried are just a bit larger than the Mini-14 well. In addition, the spine on the back of the AR mag is much larger than on the Mini, and a different shape. The AR has a latch catcher (??) on the left side to engage the mag release on the AR. The Mini does not have this, and the protrusion on the AR mags won't allow it to seat into the well, assuming you could bypass the other differences.

Ramline made some several years ago that would work in Mini-14"s and in AR's. i have 6 of them. i had to glue a small peice of plastic on the side of the mags so the wouldn't flop around in the Mini"s, but they worked fine. the were translucent plastic.

If you get an email from Ruger that they are out of stock and backordered you might want to call and double check.  I have some ordered and got such an email.  I called to check when more might be available.  They were having computer problems and could not process the orders.  They actually have the mags, but because of the delay in shipping Ruger sent out the emails to conform to some regulation dealing with mail order sails.  Thats not to say that they may not run out later.

I actually got two emails minutes apart both about being out of stock.  Hopefully mine shipped also as I ordered pretty quick, very early 11-5 about 3:00 a.m.
