Chinese Rear Admiral Lou Yuan said that if the Chinese would sink two carriers and kill 10,000 people that the USA would crumble and they would see how frightened we would be.

Note to Dear Chinese Rear Admiral Lou Yuan,

Please note the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor and the results thereof.  It led to China no longer being a Japanese territorial possession.

It may not be a Confucius idiom, but it would be wise to study history to avoid repeating it.

Sincerely,
Uncle Sam

Back when the Trade Towers were taken down, I wondered what the youth of that time thought about us going to war over it.

I asked some friends what their HS aged son felt...was he "anti-war" as many folks were during the Nam period.

They chuckled and said  "No.  He says we Nuke them!!...and then Nuke Japan again to show the world we never forget!!!."

We tend to get extremely POed when attacked....and I don't think ever scared...as the Admiral predicted.

I do wonder if the Democrats would become Americans again or if they would blame it on Trump and push for capitulation.

The carrier escort Fleet has more power than the entirety of the Chinese Navy.  Any vessel or aircraft that attacks a US carrier will he destroyed almost immediately. Unless it's some super duper stealthiest cruise-missile I would be willing to bet that the vessel in that fired it will be sunk before it even comes into range of the indices missile batteries

Some time ago the Chinese leaked their hypersonic carrier killer weapon out.  Who knows?  It may be a bit like the Soviets when they paraded "killer missiles" that were actually non-existent weapons system models.  The Chinese also just leaked a picture of a ship with a "rail gun" on it.  Maybe they have it.

I think this is coming because they feel the squeeze from the trade and North Korea negotiations.  They may be trying to intimidate our populace....or perhaps be saving face to the rest of the world.

One thing for sure.  They are playing the long game.  They are now huge players in minerals in Africa and are reaching out for oil reserves everywhere.  Once they get that under control their play is to get secure food sources....then it is game on we have nothing to negotiate with.

The scary thing is diesel subs.

They’re virtually black holes in the ocean.  The Chinese have them and they have popped up in the middle of a battle group before...not fast, but very, very quiet on battery propulsion!

SONAR should ping them??

Yes, active sonar will find them but by the time they’re that close it might be too late.

Passive sonar, what I analyzed while on active duty, “listens” for low frequency noise generated by a rotating mass or cylinder firing off the Diesel engine, prop and shaft noises, etc..

While a diesel boat is running on battery, it’s moving slow and makes almost no detectable noise.  BLACK HOLE!

Sound travels fast and long, long distances in water.  The sooner you detect them, the faster other assets can search, detect, identify and destroy.

We used to catch the commies coming out of Kamchatka or the Norwegian Sea pretty much as soon as they hit deep water!

Clean frequencies were submerged and “dirty noises” were on the surface.

And yes, this is all unclassified!

Interesting poll, 5 choices, one answer.   So that's how they do it.
Is the viability of carriers assured?  How many anti-missile missiles are in a Battle Group's magazines
compared to the number of long range antiship missiles the Chinese can launch.  Think swarms.  You may
be the toughest guy on the block but, unless you are armored, a swarm of Killer Bees will will make you
run, die, or both.  And that Phalanx gun they say is the last line of defence, is it just one for the whole ship?

Great point PDF.  Welcome to the forum.

The Nimitz class carriers have several Phalanx on them.  The also have the Rolling Airframe Missile for point defense.  But you are exactly right, they can be overwhelmed and they can malfunction/miss.

Of course, a swarm exists because it's launch platform is intact.  If the launch platform does not exist then there will be no swarm to contend with.

But then, there is also the issue of contending with the other two legs of the triad.  Bombers and ICBM's.  A launch on a carrier, especially a nuclear one, will hardly be worth it.  There won't be a central authority remaining in China after an attack is initiated.

Don't forget the subs that are in the carrier strike group to defend it.  You can take out one maybe 2 ships before all hell would break lose.  China's econ is based on export, there is zero chance we would allow that too continue.
