Shooting instructor / class finder
« on: November 14, 2018, 05:03:17 PM »
The one decent school I had reasonable access to  - John Chapman's LMS is now a shell of a business at least here in Idaho now that he sold it lock stock and barrel to someone that worked there - they no longer have anything here in Idaho except a mailing address.

We have another one Shaw Shooting - which has stopped all public classes as of Jan 01 2019 - he is private instruction only and freely admits he will cancel a private class if a Soldier or LEO asks him for instruction even though you have prepaid for your private time.
(Admirable but still dick'ish)

Where does one start looking for other classes / instructors searching online?
Yes Thunder Ranch is a 7 hour drive and I know of Gunsite is 12 hour drive

But where / how do we find other classes / instructors ....

if you ever vacation to Florida (Disney, Sea World etc) you are pretty close to Universal Shooting Academy at Frostproof... Shannon Smith and Frank Garcia do a good job...facilities include a 600m rifle range

I can vouch for Mike Seeklander.  https://www.shooting-performance.com/

Plus he's on the show so you've got to support him if you can.  He is a patient instructor and slices down to the individual student's actions so that you can improve as a shooter.  There's a difference in shooting a gun and fighting with a gun...Mike will teach you gun fighting skills. It's the detail he catches that so impresses me.  You can be a great people person but if you can't recognize the quirks most of us have then it doesn't really help.

Try Aztec.  https://www.aztectrainingservices.com/
It has Larry Vickers and Ken Hakathorn along with others...so you know it's good.   I had a class with Sgt. Vickers and it was very good.  He doesn't drill down to the individual like Mike...but maybe it was our class size.

If you can find them, Phil Strader, Chris Collins and Steve Aryan are great instructors as well!

Also, once you compile a list of potential instructors, if distance/travel is an issue, some (or their adjunct instructors) will come to you if you can meet their requirements for a safe range and minimum number of students. I know years ago Mas Ayoob used to have a 20 student minimum (can't remember the max) in order for his LFI classes to come to your area.

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

NRA Carry Guard claims their training is really good, but what would you expect them to say? Some of their instructors are Army Special Forces and Navy SEALs veterans.
