MUSEUM SHIPS --- 2018
« on: April 15, 2018, 08:08:46 AM »
http://www.nj2bb.org/museum/  From the link you get to the original list.  If the listed ship has a website you can click on it's name to go to the website.

Ok, guys, it's 15-APR and a tad over 45 days to Museum Ships Weekend sponsored by the amateur radio club for the USS New Jersey.  I know several of you guys are hams and haven't participated in the past because you need to upgrade your tech license, you need to get an antenna up (Alf?  Pathfinder?), you have to ask permission of your mother-in-law...whatever (Deepwater's off in the South Pacific somewhere working).  Here's your reminder again this year!

And several of you have shortwave radios...and you can listen in (Peg...are you going to do that this year?).  59 ships are signed up so far and it's a cinch there will be over 100 by the time Friday June 1 comes.  This annual special event kicks off 0000Z June 2,  to 2359Z June 3, 2018 which means it starts Friday, June 1 at 6PM central time.

Over 15 of these are located in Europe.

00:00 Zulu time is 8:00 P.M. eastern time the previous day during daylight saving time. When it's not daylight saving time 00:00 Zulu would be 7:00 P.M. eastern time the previous day.

Still have the HOA-based antenna issue. I can string an NVIS relatively easily, but that won't get me far in terms of TX. May fire up the SDR or the Tacsun and just listen though.

I got a wealth of information from KN9B .  He prepared the two presentations below.  I cannot speak highly enough on the vertical loop with vertical polarization (ladder line or coax from the side not bottom or top).  I make better contacts with a loop that is 4' from the ground then I ever did with a dipole up 40 feet or so.  It has a low angle of radiation and it's more quiet than a dipole with better gain....also much less null on the sides compared to a dipole.  I'll never run a dipole again if I can hang a vertical loop.

Vertical loops:  http://www.k4vrc.com/uploads/1/0/1/5/10156032/delta_loop_140918.pdf

Then there is a wealth of information here on hidden antennas:http://www.k4vrc.com/uploads/1/0/1/5/10156032/2015_tvarc_antenna_guide.pdf

Well, good, Rastus, thanks for the files, just 100 pages of light reading to do!!!

I do have a Chameleon MPAS vertical I can try as well, forgot about that one. If I had the cash, I would pick up an Alexloop at Hamvention this week when I go (eat your heart out, Ken!) but cash is a little spare right at the moment. My lovely bride keeps booking us on extravagant travels, this year Alaska again for 3 weeks.

Speaking of expensive travel here's one my wife and I are going on next year:
https://www.nationalww2museum.org/events-programs/educational-travel/victory-pacific

They haven't updated it for 2019 yet but they took my booking and some cash.  We're going to add the Peleliu option to the base product.

You still need to get an antenna up in the air for Museum Ships Weekend and at least try to hit a couple of the ships.  Surely there are one or two on the list you are interested in.  In the past the Nautilus was one I really wanted as was the USS Missouri along with the Kidd and the Alabama.
