We did Thanksgiving at my house this year and this Rabbit did the cooking.
It was a simple, southern-style meal with a couple of added extras. We had roasted turkey with traditional dressing. And I did a second casserole dish of oyster dressing just because I like it. I also did a dish of green bean casserole, too, but not the kind with Campbell's soup. I make my own bechamel (basic white sauce) then load it up with bacon, sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions. That goes into a covered Pyrex 9x13 with the green beans, and into the oven. Final 10 minutes I uncover it and heap French's friend onions on top. It looks like the traditional dish, but tastes like heaven.
And we had mashed taters and plenty of gravy. And we had sweet potato pie with freshly whipped cream to top it for dessert.
But the best addition to the meal came in the form of Hazcat and Deepwater sharing our meal. Turns out they were both "orphans" this year. Haz Jr is in ship's engineer school and couldn't make it home. Deepwater's family is on the west coast and his wife is back with her family in Peru, so I adopted them for the day. Deepwater brought over a batch of homemade noodles with herbs and butter on top.
Of course, we started the afternoon with some Larceny bourbon--an exceptionally smooth tot that Hazcat claims is superior to Maker's Mark. And I'm not convinced he isn't right--good stuff.
Good friends is something to be thankful for all year round, but it's especially nice at Thanksgiving.
Hope you all enjoyed your day as much as we enjoyed ours.
