I have been using CFE 223 powder for awhile in a DPMS LR308 24" heavy barrel.
Hodgdon recommends a starting load with the Sierra 168 g HPBT Match at 46.6 for about 2600fps.
I found that this particular load strings the shots (10 round groups) vertically, with the group size about 3/4" larger than my base load, which is 40 grains IMR 4895, Sierra 168 g HPBT for 2475fps, 10 round groups (10 groups, 100 rounds) 3/4" to 1 inch group at 100 yards. This rifle is very acccurate, with my base load putting 4 rounds in at 1/2".
I'm cheating guys, It has a national match trigger in it, and I'm shooting at 25X with the scope.
I called hodgdon, and asked about reducing the starting load, and they said ok, so I went with 44.5 grains, same bullet.
The groups still would not match the IMR 4895 loads.
Vertical stringing can be caused by the bolt trying to unlock when the pressures are still high. A gunsmith friend told me this.
I cannot attest to this, but I know my rifle doesn't do as well with it.
The barrel does clean up very quickly, though, and I still have about 6 # of CFE 223 left.
