Just tell me what .357 does that .44 doesn't do better?

It costs less to shoot because .38 is cheaper than .44 special? Also at the time it was designed, .38 was the default cop gun, so in that sense it was like buying a 9mm or a .40 today. However I will grant you that all things being equal, if I were starting from scratch for a woods/nightstand gun, a .44 would make more sense. However, a .454 would be even smarter as .45 Colt is cheaper than .44. However, I can find .38 and .357 easier than any of the alternatives. The fact that its popular makes it popular (sort of like Paris Hilton).

PS I am not talking concealability as we are discussing a full frame revolver, but oh yeah, there is the pocket pistol in the same caliber issue as well.
