Title: What is the first Christmas present you remember getting?
Post by: Majer on December 06, 2018, 01:33:26 PM
Stole this idea from Starline Brass on FB,
The first Christmas present I remember was  the Mighty Mo toy cannon that shot plastic cannon balls.

Mattel Fanner 50 Single Holster gun and belt.  Was in the 5th grade so that would have been in about 1957.
I used to watch the opening to the "Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp" and out draw him.  I kept it fair and did not start my draw till I saw him make his move.  I know my gun was lighter than the real ones...but who knows what TV Wyatt was using.

Kids in the neighborhood used to ask me to show my "fast draw".  One would say go and I'd do my thing.  They seemed impressed.

I did seem to see evidence I had a faster than normal reaction time as life went on.

I got one of those too!

It was in the trash heap the next morning due to my brother and I targeting a milk bottle my sis was carrying!

POP was not happy but our range and trajectory were spot on!

I don't have  any good memories  of Christmas as a child, lots of bad ones.  I honestly, don't remember anything from more then a few years ago.  To this day I hate Christmas.  Not humbug,  hate, but I would not miss it if it didn't  happen. I remember things I have people, but that's about it.

When I was 12 I got a youth 1100 20 ga, but I don't remember opening it, or even remember it until the 1st duck hunt.

Now if you want too hear bad things, how many hours do you have?

It kills me too see Christmas shit go in store before  Halloween

Lionel Super O train set.  Around 1960-62...can't remember perzactly.

I had forgotten the Mighty Mo even existed.  I checked on eBay...there was one...only $750 bucks.

Dang I hate to hear that for you Tab.  It should not be that way.

A lump of coal.

...I guess my parents must have been more well-off than your folks because I always got a switch to go with my lump of coal.

Did you get to pick out your own switch, or did you get one they chose for you?

I just remembered something that must have been a Christmas gift. My younger brother and I got Uncle Henry LB7 Bear Paws when we were teens. I still have mine but can't carry it around here because the blade is over 3". Unlike all the pictures and videos I've seen, my sheath is black. Maybe I dyed it 40 years ago and don't remember doing it.

I have one of those knives also, Jumbo...I bought mine from a friend's dad who was a MAC Tools distributor. It's the same Uncle Henry, but has the MAC logo on one side of the blade.

I guess the first toy I can remember for Christmas was a battery powered toy train engine that would run until it bumped something and then change directions until it ran into something again. It had an extremely loud whistle for a toy. That was probably around 1970.

I remember getting my first knife...not sure what the occasion was..maybe it was just before we moved away.

I was 11, in the 5th grade and the father of one of the girls in the neighborhood, Ken Pennington, gave me my first knife (he had checked with my parents to see if it was ok).  He told me to keep it with me as a man should always be armed.

He also taught me to play chess.

I had that knife with me when I joined the army at age 18,  but lost track of it some time since then.

I think one of my brothers had one of these too and they were Christmas presents. I had a robot with machine guns that popped out of its chest but I'm not sure which one. I think it was like the first one but bigger. There was a version of the second one that had a robot head instead of an astronaut's. I don't think the first one came with a robot head too but there several robot variations by the same company. I think they were a foot tall and the batteries go in the back. They're worth about $250 now.

My first knife must have been my Barlow. I don't know what brand it was but it said BARLOW on it and the handle was a saw cut texture. I think it had a sheepsfoot blade and maybe a pen blade too. Some cop took it from me.

I had a Barlow too. I bought it from my uncle's local store the first year I worked in tobacco.....he had them on one of those stand-up cardboard displays and think I paid $3.99 for it (circa 1982). I think I still have it in one of my "keepsake" cigar boxes in my trunk under the bed.

My first knife was a tiny 3-bladed jack knife my grandpa gave me when I was around six or seven. It's not even as big as my little finger...... still have it too.

+10  good work TAB.

A little  more than 80% of my employees are ex military.  For the most part they work hard, follow instructions and don't complain.   About 25% are ex elite forces, 2 ex seals, 1 ranger, 1 coastie jumper, a gb and a under water demo guy.    I don't go out of my way to find ex military, and I don't give them any "points" . They just tend too have what I am looking for in a person.  I want some one that understands snafu  is what you are going too see daily.... get the job done, done right and done on time.

And if your competitors mess with you make them disappear..... JUST JOKING. ;) ;) ;) ;)

On the other hand, it does sound like your crew would be the start of a good SHTF survival group.  :) :) :) :)

I can see how ex-military are very likely to have the qualities you look for.  I am curious, do the other ~19% have something in common that would lend to them having those qualities?

Awwww....geeee...there you go denigrating a group of people who worked really hard for a really long time to get a degree that is totally worthless in most settings.  How could you?  How insensitive....you should consider a sensitivity course....or I could send you one of my sensitivity class certificates and you could photoshop your name on it....

Maybe I should have specified it was about degrees that overall provide a job with a path to a standard of living less than that of a teacher.

On the other hand....you guys crack me up.

I thought the only jobs they got were unpaid internships.

The first thing everyone needs to learn is that there is no such thing as free.  You are paying for it one way or another.

that is very true, but I don't like add-ons to pricing.

I hear ya.   When I see an add-on for "handling"  I want to add a credit on my side since I have to bring it in the house and unpack it.  My "handling" is as valuable as theirs...
