Title: Do You Guys Eat Spam?
Post by: Rastus on August 10, 2017, 02:08:00 PM
Do you guys eat Spam?  I have been slicing it thin and frying it lately.  I really like the black pepper variety but the jalepeno is good too.

I can't remember the last time I had Spam!

I'm guessing 50 years, maybe more!

It's been a long time for me too but not 50 years. Maybe 20 or so. Once in awhile I see it on sale and think about getting some but never do. IIRC it tastes something like ham, but when I want ham I usually get a HoneyBaked ham.

When I want ham, I buy pork butt!  Yea, yea...wrong end of the hog!  Either way, pulled pork is fine vittles!

Love me some Spam.   Fried with cheddar cheese after you flip it.  Hmm.  Hmm.

Been many years...I just suspected I might not want to find out what was in it...and it was so long ago they might not have been using and Ingredients list.

Will check it...it is handy and easy to store for awhile.

Really good for long term meat storage....especially if the idiots in North Korea fire off an EMP weapon.

NOKO. Can't spell EMP!

They can barely hit open water let alone the center of the lower 48!

Had some o' that pulled shoulder tonight.

Been at least 35 years since I had SPAM in any form. We ate a lot of it in the 70's and early 80's....sometimes out the can sliced on sammiches, as well as fried, (bologna too).

It is really good meat.  Sp (shoulder of pork = Butt) + am (ham).  Chopped, seasoned, and canned in natural gelatin.  Made just over 100 miles from me, and I go by there every week.

Fired Spam is the rich folk version of fried baloney.  Love the stuff, but wifey looks it the same way she does when I pull out the kraut jar.

I remember on TV commercials they said it was made from pork shoulders and ham. I just checked their website and it listed the ingredients as:

1. Pork with ham
2. Salt
3. Water
4. Potato starch
5. Sugar
6. Sodium nitrite

There's no gelatin added, it forms as it's cooked in the cans. And no mystery meat.

I found this at Wikipedia: Spam was introduced by Hormel in 1937. Ken Daigneau, brother of a company executive, won a $100 prize that year in a competition to name the new item. Hormel claims that the meaning of the name "is known by only a small circle of former Hormel Foods executives", but popular beliefs are that the name is an abbreviation of "spiced ham", "spare meat", or "shoulders of pork and ham". Another popular explanation is that Spam is an acronym standing for "Specially Processed American Meat" or "Specially Processed Army Meat".

I see bologna mentioned in a couple of posts. I don't recall having any in several years. I don't have anything against it, I just like other lunch-meats better, like sliced chicken, smoked turkey, and ham. I do have a problem with fried bologna. I haven't had it since I was a kid and always hated the smell of it. As I recall it smelled like someone whizzed in the frying pan.

Fried salami with provolone cheese.... ;D

Smoked baloney is a big deal here in Oklahoma.  It's not bad.

There was a little store in our hometown that had a small meat counter. The old guy that ran it had a "log" of bologna (baloney as we called it) and would slice it to whatever thickness the customer wanted. I liked it thin and my dad liked it thicker. It was good on a sandwich with mayo, lettuce, and tomato.
You can still get it at walmart's deli, sliced as you want it.

I eat Spam now and then, and keep some on hand. I love to take it along camping as it does not need to be in the cooler.  I have not tried any of the other varieties, and I actually prefer Dak ham; hard to find around here at times.

If I remember correctly, Hawaii is the largest consumer of Spam.  Also, there are two items that spike in usage when times are tough, Spam and Peanut Butter. LOL

I love it, but sans the green beans.

You know what might make it even better?

BACON.

My grand babies are in Hawaii and according to my daughter, them kids love them some Spam.

I can't get by the old tale that the Samoans liked to feast on Spam.  Said it tasted like missionary.  The Hormel people made a special formulation of Spam for those down-island natives.  It had significantly more fat and at room temperature it would be liquid which allowed the Big Kahunas to drink it straight from the can.

My own theory is I can ALWAYS find something better to eat than Spam.

But, if you have the need to eat missionary, go for it, boys.  As for me, I'll pass.

I ate enough as a kid. Around 35 years ago I took this same position.

When money was tight sometimes in my twenties, I sometimes had Vidalia onion and mayo sandwiches (sometimes with pickles), but just couldn't eat spam even though it was cheap (potted meat either, the wife likes it).

Ever had Spotted Dick?

LOL

It's been a few years, actually more than a few, since I had onion sandwiches. I bought a bag of Vidalia onions and put about a 1/2" thick slice on white bread with mayo. I think it was a 5 pound bag of onions, possibly more, and I ate all of them as onion sandwiches. It never occurred to me to put SPAM on them but it sounds good to me.

Potted meat is a no-go for me. I don't like tripe and other mystery meat products. No canned so-called Vienna sausages either. This is what Viennas are supposed to be, the original Viennas, not the chicken Viennas. http://www.koegelmeats.com/products.cgi?Item=viennas

Spotted Dick is always good for a few laughs. If I had spots on mine I'd see a doctor right away.

Sickness is keeping me home today.  I think I'll fry up some thin-sliced spam.
