Classes at NRA Headquarters teach how you can Refuse to be a Victim

Local residents take part in personal safety course at NRA Headquarters

refusetobeavictim1NRA’s Refuse To Be A Victim® Program is a four-hour personal safety seminar where you can pick up dozens of tips on how to act, and react, to potentially dangerous situations. Taught a few hundred of times a year, we recently had one such seminar here at NRA Headquarters.

Here’s National Coordinator Ruthann Sprague with the report:

Fairfax, Virginia – Thirty-six men, women and teens from Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia gathered at NRA Headquarters last weekend for a Refuse To Be A Victim® Seminar. Taught by one of our seasoned instructors, the new students learned how to develop a personal safety plan and avoid becoming a victim of crime. Simple things like where to park, using longer bolts in your door jam and how to handle those mystery phone calls were just a few of the suggestions shared that Saturday.

But it wasn’t only about learning what to do. There were also some who where there to learn how to teach what to do. Eleven individuals, all together, stayed after the initial seminar to complete a Refuse to be Victim instructor certification course. Learning the technical aspects of the program, instructor expectations, presentation skills and more, those eleven students will soon be certified to share those same lessons with the people in their community.

“I felt this course was excellent, very informative and relative to our current times,” said one attendee. “I am going to organize a class for my neighborhood.”

Led by Captain Edward O’Carroll of the Fairfax County Police Department (an Executive Refuse to be a Victim Counselor), the seminar ran from from 8:30 in the morning until just after lunch. There to assist was NRA employee and Refuse to be a Victim Instructor Candice Newcomb … both of whom received high praises from their students.

“This was a most enjoyable, valuable course. Ed was fabulous and a wealth of knowledge. Candice was great also. I feel very energized by this class. Thank you for a wonderful experience. Wish more classes were available here at NRA HQ.”

refusetobeavictim2Refuse To Be A Victim® Seminars are held all around the country throughout the calendar year. If you think this sounds like the seminar for you, check out the NRA Instructor’s website at www.nrainstructors.org and find a seminar near you.
