The Area 6 region includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

This marks the 3rd year that Glock, whose pistols are popular with many competing in the Production and Limited-10 divisions, will be the main sponsor of the match.

“Glock has had a tremendous impact on the shooting sports and not just through its generous support of matches like ours,” said Charles Bond, USPSA Area 6 director. “Through the years GSSF, the Glock Sport Shooting Foundation, has served as the unofficial feeder program for Practical Shooting getting tens of thousands of shooters into the shooting sports and ultimately into competitions like the Area 6 Championship.”

The Area 6 Championship will take place April 16 through 18 at the South River Gun Club in Covington, Ga. Upwards of 325 shooters representing Area 6 and 20 other states are expected to attend including Team Glock members Dave Sevigny, Jessie Abbate and Randi Rogers. International shooters from Columbia and Jamaica are also expected to compete.

Competitors will vie for top honors in six divisions: Production, Limited, Limited-10, Single Stack, Revolver and Open. More than 80,000 rounds are expected to be put down range as shooters negotiate their way through 12 challenging stages featuring a variety of target presentations and obstacles.

For more information on the USPSA Area 6 Championship sponsored by Glock, or to register to compete in the match, visit www.USPSA6.org.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — The U.S. Practical Shooting Association (USPSA), the national governing body for the sport of Practical Shooting in America, has announced the dates of their 2010 national championships. Divided into four events, the nationals are expected to draw more than 1,000 top-level shooters competing in a variety of divisions.

The USPSA National Championship dates are as follow:
April 28 – March 2 Single Stack Nationals
September 9 – 12 MultiGun Nationals
October 8 – 12 Open & Limited-10 Nationals
October 13 – 16 Limited, Production & Revolver Nationals

“The USPSA national championships are the pinnacle of the practical shooting season in the U.S. Not only do these matches draw the best American shooters, they also bring in several of the top international competitors,” said Dave Thomas, executive director for USPSA.

The first event on the calendar, the USPSA Single Stack Nationals, will take place April 28 through May 1 at the PASA Park ranges in Barry, Ill. In 2009 this event drew 270-plus devotees of the venerable 1911 pistol from which the match derives its name.

Next on the schedule is USPSA’s MultiGun Nationals which will take place in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club ranges September 9 through 12. The MultiGun championship draws close to 150 shooters and tests the competitor’s ability to engage multiple targets over a variety of field course stages all while utilizing the three firearm platforms: pistol, rifle and shotgun. The MultiGun Nationals will determine America’s best all-around shooters in the Open, Tactical, Limited and Heavy Metal divisions.

The USPSA championship season will wrap up with the back-to-back handgun championships which will also be held at the Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club ranges in Las Vegas. The Open and Limited-10 division matches will be held October 8 through 12 while the Limited, Production and Revolver division matches will take place October 13 through 16.

With over 600 shooters participating, the USPSA back-to-back handgun championships represent the largest gathering of shooters within the U.S. competing in the sport of Practical Shooting. The popularity of the match is such that nearly all of the 18,000+ USPSA members will battle for an invitation to the match. In addition to America’s top guns, the match will also draw some of the best shooters from South America, Europe and the Pacific Rim.

“The popularity of our national championships is due in part to the strong support we receive from the firearms industry,” explained Thomas. “Many of the biggest names in the industry partner with USPSA as sponsors, and any company looking for an avenue to effectively reach our membership and their estimated $50 million annual buying power can look no further than our nationals as the perfect shooter outreach opportunity.”

For more information on the USPSA National Championships and other major matches on the 2010 schedule, as well as the many sponsorship opportunities USPSA offers, please visit www.uspsa.org or call (360) 855-2245.

Today, I’m heading out to Arizona to one of the finest gun ranges in the country, The Scottsdale Gun Club , to shoot some new videos for the Personal Firearms Defense DVD Series. When I looked at my itinerary this morning, it reminded me that I wanted to post a blog about an AZ project that should be close to the heart of anyone in the private sector training industry. In many ways, Jeff Cooper was the Isaac Newton of our profession. He started the industry with American Pistol Institute and organized , articulated and developed the teaching theories that dominated defensive firearms training for a couple of decades and continue to influence our thought and practices today. His “Modern Technique” is still the core of many programs, in fact.

Jeff Cooper’s wife and daughter, Janelle Cooper and Lindy Cooper-Wisdom, have undertaken a project to ensure that his legacy is remembered long after we’re gone by providing small scholarships to individual students who wish to train in programs that can trace their lineage back to Cooper. Courses at the current Gunsite, with Clint Smith or Ken Campbell and others were mentioned when I spoke with the Cooper’s at SHOT Show.

Perhaps more importantly, the Jeff Cooper Legacy Foundation aims to build a permanent museum in Arizona at the site of his school, which I think is a great idea. The library, writings, firearms collection and other memorabilia of Jeff Cooper and the early days of this industry would be on display for anyone and everyone interested in defensive firearms to appreciate and learn from.

Whether you still train in the doctrine of the “modern technique” or you have never heard of it, you should consider supporting this foundation… because it is protecting the memory of the foundation of our industry.

Here is a quick video clip about the organization: Jeff Cooper Legacy Foundation at SHOT Show 2010.

Visit their website and see how you can help, in addition to opportunities to donate, the website offers books and videos for sale as well.
